Hi Rose! Security Studies is a branch of international politics, or as some of us would say, it is international politics. Or you could say that it's a way of looking at international relations.

It looks at what makes humans and states insecure (war, environment, state structures, the structure of the international system, threats to values etc etc), how that's changed over time (and there have been big changes since the end of the cold war) and if it's ever possible to secure ourselves, and how.

Sorry.... that wasn't a very short answer was it?

On that note, the other day i was talking to a few course friends about how the longer you do politics, the less you know - someone asks you a perfectly simple question and you give a very complex answer in response.... my friend said that someone had asked him why the americans had an electrol college system. At level, he would have said "because it's in their consititution" now he responds giving the full reasons, all the arguements in the federalist papers, the historical development and a range of case studies showing why it works and why it doesn't. American politics is not actually an option at my university either!

    Life really isn't simple.

Specialist track. Should be more interesting than a research track.

Someone told me that the gym is not too bad, and i figure that the lack of sparkly places will help me save money. Alternativly, it might mean that I have a sparklybinge every time i reach civilisation. And they are building a new departmental building for intenational politics. and the library is supposed to be excellent.

I'm applying to some other places as well, but it's so nice to know that i've got somewhere good to go! I'd be quite happy to stay in sheffield (it's great) but one needs the academic challenge.
